Yazd UNESCO Garden's Renovation Nears Completion

Restoration work on the historical UNESCO-inscribed Dolat Abad Garden in Yazd Province will be completed by the end of September, said the head of the garden's world heritage base.

The renovation project started in early April, as part of efforts to make improvements in the structure of the site and reinforce the building, Majid Oloumi, head of the base, said.

"Restoration of water canals and the eastern part of the grounds, replacing the damaged floor tiles with new ones, reducing and redistributing the weight of ceilings, filling out the holes on walls and the roof, strengthening the time-worn walls as well as restoration of water ponds and reservoirs are part of the work so far done," ILNA quoted Oloumi as saying.

Further plans are being drafted for the next phase that involve studies on traditional architecture and decoration, organizing the parking lot, outdoor furniture and lighting, the official added.

Dolat Abad Garden is one of nine Iranian gardens inscribed collectively on UNESCO's World Heritage List as "the Persian Gardens".

The main buildings in the garden are: 'biruni' (outside or public quarters) situated on the east side, 'andaruni' (inside or private quarters) situated on the west side, the main entrance, as well as Iran's highest wind-tower (33.80 meters high).

The vestibule and the wind-tower are the two most important structures in the complex, where water and air meet in the most glorious possible way. One of the biggest in Iran, the garden was built during the reign of the Zand dynasty (1751–1794).
