Two ancient clay crocks were discovered in Shahabieh Village of Khomein County in Markazi Province on Thursday, during construction excavations.
"The age-old dishes have been found in an area which had not been designated as an archaeologically valuable site," Mohammad Hosseini, head of provincial office of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization was quoted as saying by Borna News Agency.
"The closest archaeological site to the place where the clay crocks were found is at least several kilometers away," Hosseini said, adding that the discovered items raise the possibility that the new site might have more relics hidden under the ground.
According to the official, besides the crocks, there are broken pieces of dish that are obviously parts of big clay containers among the discoveries.
"The items have been sent to a museum for detailed investigation and possible restoration," he said.
There are pieces of evidence that the crocks belong to the Sassanid Empire (ruled in Iran from 224 to 651 AD).
The discovered items will be repaired and transferred to the province's museums to go on display.
