23% Drop in Iranian Travelers to Turkey

The number of Iranian travelers to Turkey stood at 122,000 in May 2018, which indicates a fall of 23.4% compared with the previous May's 159,000.

Iranian visitors accounted for 3.32% of total travelers to Turkey during the one-month period, while the number was 5.5% for the same period last year, Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism data shows.

Russian visitors topped the list of foreign visitors to Turkey in May, making up 23.5% of total travelers alone. German and British travelers came next with 11% and 7% shares, respectively.

The recent spiraling surge in foreign exchange rates in Iranian market could be named as the main and foremost reason behind the slide.

According to the Tehran Gold and Jewelry Union, the average price of Turkish Lira was around 10,700 rials in May 2017, whereas the rate was nearly 15,000 rials this year.

The ministry's data, however, indicates a 26.63% growth in the number of Iranian travelers during the first five months of 2018.

Nearly one million Iranians visited the neighboring country during the five-month period, comprising more than 8.5% of total travelers to the Mediterranean country.
