Louvre in Tehran Extended

The exhibition 'Louvre in Tehran', currently underway at National Museum of Iran, has been extended until July 30, an official at Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization said.

The event, which puts on show over 50 artifacts belonging to ancient civilizations of Western Asia, Europe and North Africa, had initially been scheduled for March 5 to June 8.

However, by the consent of the head of Louvre Museum in France and Iranian heritage authorities, the exhibition will run 50 more days in Tehran, CHTN quoted Mohammad Hasan Talebian, deputy for cultural heritage at ICHHTO as saying.

The exhibition was supposed to be held at Khorasan Grand Museum in Mashhad, after the end of Tehran's show, but the event was canceled.

"Since insurance companies which were to support the event in Mashhad were not willing to collaborate with the organizers, Mashhad will not host the show," the official said.

As an outstanding cultural and diplomatic feat for both nations, the exhibition is the result of a memorandum of understanding signed between Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization and Louvre officials in 2016. Its purpose is to introduce the history and culture of different countries to the people of Iran and marks the first collaboration in the history of the two museums.

The Louvre show is the first large-scale exhibition by a major western museum in Iran.
