The officials of Tabriz have been given a week to submit their tourism plans for 2018, when the city has been nominated as the capital of Islamic tourism, to Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization.

Speaking at the fourth meeting to organize the event, Ali Asghar Mounesan, the head of ICHHTO, emphasized that the related entities must follow the schedule closely for the implementation of proposed plans.

A total of 108 urban tourism schemes have been envisioned and 130 cultural, scientific and sports events are to be held in Tabriz, Mehr News Agency reported.

The ICHHTO chief underlined the key role of public culture in holding the event in the best possible way.

“Short-term plans such as developing tourism police services, launching tourist taxis and using Tabriz 2018 logos on urban spaces could raise awareness about the event among the locals,” he said.  Mounesan stressed that the private sector should be widely involved “for no country has ever solely relied on government budgets to hold such huge events”.

“The yearlong occasion should bring about a leap in tourism industry so we have to make the best of the opportunity in the coming year,” he said. On December 23, 2015, tourism ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation member states approved the selection of Tabriz as the capital of Islamic tourism in 2018.

Measures have been implemented to serve tourists better on this occasion. According to Morteza Abdar, the head of ICHHTO’s provincial office, the hotel capacity of Tabriz was approximately 7,400 beds by 2015, but since the nomination, measures have been taken by relevant organizations to increase the capacity to 16,000 beds. Besides hotels, guesthouses have also been standardized to offer good quality services to visitors of Tabriz in 2018.

Reportedly, the government has allocated to 7.7 trillion rials ($203 million) to 22 organizations for projects related to Tabriz 2018.  Tabriz Municipality has also allocated 2.6 trillion rials ($69 million) to the cause. Besides, related bodies have been tasked with earmarking 10% of their budget for the event.
