To boost tourism in Sardroud, located about 18 km from Tabriz, East Azarbaijan Province, the authorities are supporting investment in the city’s lodging sector.

According to Rahim Shohratifar, the governor of Tabriz, free construction permits and loans offered by Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization to investors in hotel and lodging businesses are among incentives.

“Sardroud’s selection as the capital of carpet tableau has increased its potentials to attract tourists from across the world,” he told ISNA.

Carpet tableau is an ancient art in Sardroud and reportedly, 80% of the city’s residents are directly and indirectly earning their livelihoods from the business.

Sardroud’s hand-woven carpet tableau was officially registered by the World Intellectual Property Organization on January 5. It has also been registered on the National Tangible Cultural Heritage List by ICHHTO.

The National Carpet Center of Iran has also awarded the National Geographic Seal to the product, which signifies the exclusiveness of carpet tableaux production in the region.

Its selection as the capital of carpet tableau is expected to create a boom both in Sardroud’s economy and its travel market.

Apart from the exhibition and sale of hand-woven products, the city also boasts leisure facilities such as a theater hall.
