Iran's 2019 Airport Traffic Reviewed

Iran Airports Company registered a total of 379,880 takeoffs and landings in 2019.

“More than 47 million passengers were transported last year,” says Hamidreza Seyyedi, an IAC official, adding that over 472,500 tons of cargos were handled during the year, the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development's news service reported.

Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport was the busiest Iranian airport with 124,402 takeoffs and landings, as the airport handled around 15 million passengers.

Mashhad International Airport was the second busiest airport with 59,884 takeoffs and landings. It transported about 9 million passengers.

Imam Khomeini International Airport registered 43,571 takeoffs and landings, transporting more than 7 million passengers to rank third on the list of Iran’s busiest airports in 2019.

In terms of cargo transport, IKIA topped the list among Iranian airports, transporting more than 143,500 tons, followed by Mehrabad Int’l Airport with over 104,000 tons and Mashhad International Airport with over 84,000 tons.

A total of 316,000 takeoffs and landings were registered by domestic flights during the year. More than 37 million passengers and 276,000 tons of cargo were transported domestically.

Since all flights operated by Mehrabad Int’l Airport are domestic, this airport topped the list in terms of domestic flights, followed by Mashhad International Airport with 49,722 takeoffs and landings, over 7 million passengers and more than 58,000 tons of cargo. Next was Shiraz Int’l Airport with 25,673 takeoffs and landings, over 2.5 million passengers and 19,500 tons of cargo.

On the international front, 63,871 takeoffs and landings were registered. About 10 million passengers and more than 196,000 tons of cargo were transported to and from overseas destinations during 2019.

Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport was the busiest Iranian airport with 42,925 takeoffs and landings. The airport handled 7 million passengers and 143,000 tons of cargo.

Mashhad International Airport was the second busiest airport with 10,162 takeoffs and landings. It transported 1.5 million passengers and 26,000 tons of cargos, followed by Shiraz Int’l Airport with 3,948 flights, over 463,000 passengers and around 12,000 tons of cargos.

According to Seyyedi, 80% of the total takeoffs and landings during the year were operated by nine airports in the country, namely Mehrabad, Mashhad, IKIA, Shiraz, Kish, Ahvaz, Isfahan, Tabriz and Bandar Abbas. 

This is while 80% of domestic flights were operated by nine airports, namely Mehrabad, Mashhad, Shiraz, Kish, Ahvaz, Isfahan, Bandar Abbas, Tabriz and Abadan.

In 2019, 80% of all international flights in Iran were operated by only two airports, namely IKIA and Mashhad International Airport.

The analysis of flight schedules and flight time during the week shows the peak of flights was at 6 a.m. while Tuesday was the busiest day.
