At the 52nd ISSF World Championship in Changwon, South Korea, Amir Mohammad Nekounam of Iran won a gold medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men Junior final.
For the young Iranian shooter, it was the second medal of the competition, as he previously took silver in the 10m Air Rifle Men Junior event.
According to the official website of the world event, Nekounam, 20, battled fiercely with Hungary’s 18-year-old Zalan Pekler -- holder of the highest qualification score with 1169 points -- moving into the 1st place with two fantastic 5-shot series in the standing position and then maintaining the lead with five strong shots.
Nekounam’s final score of 455.5 points gave him the gold, while Pekler’s 455.0 delivered him silver. The bronze medal went to China’s 19-year-old Cao Bo with 442.9 points.
On September 5, Nekounam won the first ever medal in the history of the mixed shooting team at the same event.
Together with Armina Sadeghian, they scored 497.7 points in the finals of the 10m air rifle mixed team to grab silver after the champion Italy. The 52nd International Shooting Sport Federation World Championship in all events started in Changwon on August 31 and will run through September 15.
Its program includes 18 men’s and 11 women’s individual and team events, as well as 15 men’s junior events and 9 women’s junior events. In addition, there are three mixed team events for seniors and three for junior athletes.
