When it comes to dominance in the wrestling world, Iran hardly recognizes age. Iran won the Asian Schoolboys Championships title in Karaj on Friday. The victory comes after a successful July when young wrestlers won world and Asian juniors’ titles.

Greco-Roman and freestyle schoolboys’ teams bagged a total of 12 gold, one silver and seven bronze medals. Seven gold and three bronze were taken by Greco-Roman wrestlers and five gold, one silver and four bronze were won by the juvenile freestylers, ISNA reported.

In the Greco-Roman division, Iran got 220 points while the freestylers earned 205 points. The outstanding results mark a 26-point margin with the second team, Kazakhstan, for the Greco-Roman wrestlers and a gap of 25 points with the runner up, Japan, in the freestyle category. India was third in both divisions.

Seven boys, namely Milad Valizadeh, Mohammad Hajivand, Ali Hajivand, Saeed Esmaeili, Hojjat Rezaei, Ahmad Solh-Doust and Abolfazl Paydar won gold in the 38kg, 41kg, 44kg, 52kg, 62kg, 75kg and 85kg Greco-Roman category respectively.

Three bronze medals were taken by Mehrdad Mazhari in the 48kg, Danial Sohrabi in 57kg, and Alireza Zahir-Shahabadi, 68kg class.

In freestyle wrestling, Ebrahim Khavari won gold for the lightest weight 38kg and was followed by Mohammad-Reza Shakeri, also a gold winner, in the 41kg division.

In the 44kg weight class,

Erfan Ansari won silver in the 44kg class. The team enet on to win four bronze medals in four consecutive weight categories: Amir-Hesam Mohebi in 48kg, Ali Kaboudtabar 52kg, Ali Salimi 57kg and Shayan Mirbak in 62kg.

Nine countries from the ancient continent namely, Japan, Kazakhstan, India, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Singapore, Iraq, Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan participated in the tournament held at the Enqelab Sports Complex in Karaj, Alborz Province.

 Recent Honors

On July 10, junior Greco-Roman wrestlers won the Cadet World Championships title in Zagreb after 22 years with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals after they beat powerhouses Russia and Turkey.

Iran’s freestyle team won the title at the same event on July 8. With a total of three gold, one silver and three bronze medals, Iranian freestylers left Croatia with the team title and 152 points followed by the US with 132 points.

Junior wrestlers too dominated both categories in the New Delhi Asian Championships in July as both Greco-Roman and freestyle teams won the title in both categories.
