Gonzalo Higuain has agreed to join AC Milan on a season-long loan from Serie A rival Juventus, according to Sky in Italy.

Premier League side, Chelsea was reportedly interested in Higuain, 30, but the Argentine striker appears set to remain in Serie A. AC Milan will have an option to buy Higuain next summer for $42 m, Skysports.com reported on Tuesday.

Higuain’s brother and agent Nicolas met up with AC Milan general manager Leonardo on Monday night to discuss terms and the clubs met in Milan on Tuesday to finalize the details.

The loan move could pave the way for further deals, in which Leonardo Bonucci will return to Juve from Milan while promising defender Mattia Caldara, 24, will move in the opposite direction.

Higuain joined Juventus in 2016 and has won a pair of Serie A titles with the Turin side. He started his career with Argentine club River Plate, before a transfer to Real Madrid in January 2007.

His time in Spain saw him win honors including three La Liga titles, and score 107 goals in 190 league appearances.
