Boxers Win Two Gold Medals in Ulaanbaatar Cup

Iranian boxers bagged two gold medals at the Mongolian boxing tournament, the Ulaanbaatar Cup 2018, on Tuesday.

Iran participated in the games with three boxers, Shahin Mousavi, Omid Ahmadi-Safa, and Sajjad Kazemzadeh, Fars News Agency reported.

Mousavi and Ahmadi-Safa each won gold medals while Kazemzadeh was sent home with no medals.

Mousavi in the 75kg class beat the South Korean rival in his first match. In the second Mousavi beat the host rival to advance to the semis.

In the semifinal round, Mousavi hammered a boxer from India and secured his place in the final game to face the Thai rival. The lightweight Iranian beat his Thai contender to win gold.

Featherweight Ahmadi-Safa was the other golden boy of Iran in the tournament. He brought down a Mongolian boxer in his opening match and faced a Chinese rival next.

Overcoming the Chinese, Ahmadi-Safa saw himself in the semifinal opposite a Kazakh boxer. The young Iranian beat his rival and stormed into the final against an Indian fighter whom he defeated to take gold.

The Ulaanbaatar Cup 2018 kicked off at the Circus Mongolia on June 20, and wrapped up on June 24.

Organizers said 120 boxers from 13 countries namely Iran, South Korea, North Korea, Thailand, Iraq, Russia, India, Sri Lanka, Kyrgyzstan, China, Kazakhstan, Taiwan and host nation Mongolia competed in the five-day tournament.
