6th Place for Junior Judokas in Asian Championships

Men and women judo teams from Iran ended the Asian Junior Judo Championships in Beirut with six medals on Monday.

The gains resulted in the sixth place for Iran on the medal table.

Ghasem Baghcheghi won the only gold medal, according to Mehr News Agency.

After resting in the first round of the games, Baghcheghi defeated his South Korean rival in less than a minute with an ippon in the -90kg category. He came again to hammer the next contestant from Vietnam with a TKO and stepped into the final.

The final saw the Iranian junior bring his Kazakh rival to his knees with ippon point and win gold.

Silver man Ali Parhizkar, -100kg, also rested for the first round and followed the same path as Baghcheghi in defeating his first rival with ippon and then TKO. Judokas from Iraq and South Korea were his two first contenders. In the final clash Parhizkar succumbed to the Uzbek rival and took silver.

In +100kg category, Hamid-Reza Maalekzadeh defeated his first rival from India with TKO, and continued the winning streak by emerging victorious over an Uzbek. However, he lost the third match to a South Korean rival and ended up winning bronze by defeating Mongolian Judoka in repechage game.

Abolfazl Mahmoodi of -66kg and Amin Kamyabi also won bronze in repechage games.

Only medal winner in the women’s team, Maryam Barbat, beat her Indian rival with ippon in the first match and lost the second to Kazakh rival and went into repechage list where she settled for bronze.

A total of 196 judokas from 22 Asian countries participated in the tournament.

Iran finished sixth in total medal count. Uzbekistan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and India were the top five.
