Junior Wrestlers Crowned in Georgian Greco-Roman Cup

Junior wrestlers from Iran emerged at the top in the Mukhran Vakhtangadze Greco-Roman Cup in Batumi, Georgia on May 13.

With four gold, two silver, and one bronze, the junior fighters grabbed the champion’s trophy of the international cup, IRNA reported.

Puya Nasser in 55kg, Hossein Nowrouzi in 82kg, and Mohammad-Hadi Saroei in 87kg won gold in their respective weight classes. The last gold medal went to Amin Mirzadeh in the 110kg category.

Bahram Maroofkhani and Vahid Dadkhah came in second in the 63kg and 97kg divisions respectively.

The wrestler in 77kg class, Mohammad Choubchian was the only bronze winner. 

Eleven nations participated in the games in which Iran was crowned with 167 points. Ukraine with 162 points finished as the first runner-up. Turkey and Armenia finished third and fourth respectively. The host country came a distant sixth with 105 points.

The Georgian cup is officially certified by the United World Wrestling, the governing body of the sport and also has its place in the calendar of the UWW.

Mohammad-Ebrahim Emami, head of Iran Wrestling Referees’ Commission presented the UWW at the tournament.

The cup is named after Mukhran Vakhtangadze who is from Batumi, the host city. He is a Georgian wrestler who competed in the Men’s Greco-roman 85 kg at the 2000 Summer Olympics and won the bronze medal.
