Shojaei’s AEK Athens Celebrates League Title

Iranian football legionnaire Masoud Shojaei celebrated the Greece Super League title along with his team AEK Athens at the end of the league games on Saturday.

The title was secured after beating Levadiakos 2-0 on April 22, Xinhua reported.

AEK celebrated its first league championship in 24 years. Although the team was sure of the title, in the last game it downed Apollon Smyrnis 1-0.

The team was declared champion of Greece Super League in Athens, with thousands of fans defying the rain to join in the celebration, singing the anthem of the club.

Spanish coach Manolo Jiménez lifted the trophy with his players who received a heroes’ welcome, as fireworks illuminated the sky over Athens.

Thousands of fans joined players in a rally of triumph from the Apollon Stadium where the match was held.

All eyes now are on a cup double, since AEK is scheduled to meet arch-rivals PAOK in the Greek Cup final next Saturday.

Founded in Athens in 1924, AEK has become one of the three most successful teams in Greek football (plus Olympiakos and Panathinaikos), winning 31 national titles.

Last December, Shojaei made his move in the Greece Superleague from Panionios to AEK Athens. The midfielder had  joined Panionios in 2016.

Shojaei started his professional career in Iran with Sanat Naft team in 1999 and joined Saipa FC a year later. He played in La Liga teams such as Las Palmas and Osasuna between 2008 and 2014.

The 33 year old has played for Team Melli in two World Cup matches and three Asian cups.
