Casillas Wins Sixth League Title With Porto

A sixth league title of his career could not come soon enough for former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, and a draw between Benfica and Sporting CP on Friday was enough to crown his Porto team champion in Portugal.

It is the 28th league victory in the club’s history after four years of domination by Benfica, Marca reported.

“The league is close, it’s only a small step away, but I have been through a lot in football and I always say the same: ‘I want to win it as soon as possible’,” Casillas said after beating Maritimo in his last outing.

“Leaving after two years without a trophy would have been a bitter ending,” Casillas said last summer after renewing his contract.

Now, the 36-year-old is back in the team and making big saves, such as in key ties against Benfica (a 1-0 win) and Sporting (a 2-1 victory).

He has now won 23 titles in his career including a World Cup, two European Championships, three Champions Leagues, six league titles, two Intercontinental Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two Copa del Reys and two Supercopa de Espanas.

His five previous league wins were all with Real Madrid, coming in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008 and 2012.
