Manuel Negrete’s sublime volley for Mexico against Bulgaria in Mexico 1986 has been voted by football fans around the globe as the greatest goal scored at the FIFA World Cup.

From March 31-April 9, FIFA invited fans to take part in the FIFA World Cup Greatest Goals bracket on the official FIFA World Cup Facebook page, narrowing down their choice from 32 wonder goals scored at the tournament through the years, FIFA announced on Monday.

Negrete overcame Eder’s outstanding long-range volley against USSR in Spain 1982 in the finale. Both overcame tough competition to make it to the final two, before Negrete was crowned by fans as the greatest.

Negrete, 59 is former Mexico football player and current manager. During his eight years of being with his national team he played 57 games and scored 12 goals one of which was selected by the fans as the best goal of all World Cup events.

Goal from Argentinean football genius Diego Maradona in 1986 World Cup to England, which was commonly known as the goal of the century, was in the rally but was not selected.
