La Liga to Kick Off Esports Tournaments in Barcelona

La Liga announced on Tuesday the launch of its first esports tournament to take place in Barcelona next month, which it says aims to be the premier gaming competition in Spain.

The competition, consisting of an online qualification phase followed by a tournament beginning on April 16 on Xbox and Playstation platforms, will determine which players represent Spain at the EA SPORTS FIFA 18 Global Series Playoffs in June, the gateway to the FIFA eWorld Cup 2018, Reuters reported.

“McDonald’s Virtual La Liga eSports touches down in Spain as the first major project from La Liga eSports,” said a statement from the league’s organizing body. “In association with the Professional Videogame League ... the goal is to transform this ambitious tournament into the hallmark competition in Spain.”

E Sports, also known as electronic sports, esports, is a form of competition using videogames. Most commonly, eSports take the form of organized, multiplayer videogame competitions, particularly between professional players.

The most common videogame genres associated with eSports are real-time strategy, fighting, first-person shooter and multiplayer online battle arena.

Tournaments such as The International, the League of Legends World Championship, the Evolution Championship Series and the Intel Extreme Masters provide live broadcasts of the competition, and prize money to competitors.
