Amol in Mazandaran Province is hosting the 26th Fajr Cup, an international chess tournament at Oxin Resort, February 3-10.

The event started on Saturday with more than 400 chess players while the number of participating countries has grown from 17 in the previous edition to 24 this year, IRNA reported.

“Great chess masters are among the participants,” said Mojtaba Ebrahimi, head of Mazandaran Chess Committee. “At the event are 46 renowned chess players from France, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Portugal, Denmark, Turkey, Ireland and Australia among other countries.” The rest are domestic contestants with high provincial, national and international ranks.

The games are underway in two A and B categories to separate amateurs from masters. The rating for the games is international and points are given based on the Swiss System.

The event has been welcomed by renowned chess players after being placed on the website of the World Chess Federation.

Previous editions of Fajr Cup were held just as a national tournament and it is the first time this year it is being held with participation of foreign players; it is also the first international chess championships held in Iran.
