Poland Invites National Volleyball Team to 4-Nation Cup

Poland has invited Iran’s national volleyball team to attend the Memorial of Hubert Jerzy Wagner, a volleyball friendly competition between four national teams.

The 16th edition of the tournament will be held August 24-26 in Poland, before the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, which is slated for September 9-30 in Italy and Bulgaria, Varzesh3 reported.

Hubert Jerzy (Aleksander) Wagner (1941-2002) was a former Polish volleyball player and head coach. Wagner was a member of Poland’s men’s national volleyball team from 1963 to 1971 and a participant of the Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968.

He was a bronze medalist in the European Championship 1967. As head coach, Wagner led the Polish men’s national volleyball team to titles in the World Champions 1974 and Olympic Champions 1976.

The first memorial goes back to 2003. The competition has been held every year since. Iran has attended the tournament in two editions, 2012 and 2015 and finished fourth in both years.

For the 16th edition, Russia and France have accepted the invitation by the organizers, the Hubert Wagner foundation. Therefore, Russia, France, Iran and the host country Poland will be the four attending teams.

Iran held 8th place in the FIVB ranking as of July 2017. Poland with a much better performance was in third place as Russia ties the fourth place with Italy. France is shadowing Iran in the ranking table at the 9th spot.
