The 114-member Iranian delegation finished runner-up in the third edition of the Asian Youth Para Games in Dubai on Thursday.

Japanese athletes came first after winning 43 gold, 29 silver and 26 bronze medals with 98 medals overall, Tasnim News Agency reported.

Although Iran won a total of 118 medals, 10 more than Japan, it stood second because of the fewer gold medals. Iranian athletes took 39 gold, 44 silver and 35 bronze medals.

China was third with 27 gold, nine silver and five bronze medals or a total of 41 medals.

The host, UAE, was placed 10th with 17 medals (nine gold, five silver and three bronze).

Japan and Iran sent the two largest contingents with 89 and 114 athletes respectively. Iran showed a strong performance particularly in athletics and powerlifting while Japan showed excellence in swimming.

The third Asian Youth Para Games brought together 800 athletes from 30 countries in seven fields.

Outside of the competition, the young para-athletes had the opportunity to take part in workshops alongside the games. Most of the workshops were delivered thanks to a grant by the Agitos Foundation, the development arm of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Athletes were also educated on anti-doping measures following collaboration between the Japanese Anti-doping Agency and the Asian Paralympic Committee.
