Marc Marquez won the MotoGP title for a fourth time in Valencia season finale on Sunday.

The Repsol Honda star already had one hand on the title thanks to a 21-point lead over Andrea Dovizioso and confirmed the crown when the Italian ran wide and fell in the closing stages, Crash.net reported.

Marquez had saved a massive moment at turn one with his elbow and went on to finish third, behind Dani Pedrosa and Johann Zarco.

Dovizioso had to win the race to have any chance of beating Marquez to the crown.

Nonetheless, Dovizioso’s title challenge has been the surprise of the season, the Italian enjoying his best ever grand prix season as he matched Marquez on six wins and eclipsed new teammate and triple world champion Jorge Lorenzo.

Marquez - previously MotoGP champion in 2013, 2014 and 2016 - now breaks clear of Lorenzo to become Spain’s first ever four-time premier class title winner.

The 24-year-old is also a six-time champion in all classes, after a 125cc crown in 2010 and Moto2 title in 2012.

Marquez is contracted to remain at Repsol Honda - where he has raced since his 2013 MotoGP debut, winning 35 races - until the end of 2018.
