Bundesliga fans are demanding the end of video assistant referee (VAR) testing in Germany as the system’s German league chief, Helmut Krug was replaced on Monday amidst accusations of influencing matches.

The German Football Association is allegedly reacting to a report in ‘Bild Am Sonntag’, the largest-selling German national Sunday newspaper, which accused Krug, who will also cease working as a supervisor in the German Football League’s Control Center in Cologne with immediate effect, of influencing the decision of the VAR in a manner not befitting his role. Krug has denied the claims, Thesun.co.uk reported.

VAR is an association football assistant referee that reviews decisions made by the head referee with the use of video footage and a headset for communication. VARs are not currently part of the Laws of the Game (codified rules by the sport’s governing body FIFA), but their use is currently being trialed by the International Football Association Board in a number of different competitions.

The VAR is being trialed this season in Italy and Germany with football’s governing body FIFA yet to decide whether it will be used in June’s World Cup in Russia.
