Fernando Alonso has been handed a two-point sanction and given a warning over his sportsmanship after ignoring blue flags to allow race leaders to pass by during the Japan Grand Prix.
Race officials felt that the Spanish driver unnecessarily interfered with the contest between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen by not giving them enough space to go past, Marca.com reported.
Alonso was battling for tenth place with Massa and claimed that he did give some space on a couple of occasions but it has not been interpreted that way as it took almost a lap for Hamilton to overtake him.
“I tried to make way as much as possible but if they consider that I interfered then I will accept the sanction,” he said. “In any case they were first and second, and after going past me they continued to be first and second.”
