Four-wheel motorcycles will be added to Tehran's fire extinguishing equipment within the next three months, Tehran Fire Department announced.
According to Mehdi Davari, the department's head, the new vehicles are set to be deployed in the capital's District 12 where Tehran’s Grand Bazaar is located, ISNA reported.
"The motorbikes will start operating maximum by November," he added.
The new vehicles’ producer and volume are yet to be disclosed by the authorities.
“The Grand Bazaar is highly prone to conflagration. This makes its protection an important issue. There are numerous shops and warehouses in the area, keeping flammable products such as fabrics, papers and chemicals,” he said.
"In addition, the Grand Bazaar itself and its surrounding buildings are considered valuable cultural heritage sites, which must be protected against any damage caused by fire incidents."
Davari noted that compared to fire trucks, four-wheel motorcycles are quicker and more easily controlled in crowded and narrow roads like the bazaar area.
Tehran Fire Department has long been struggling with outdated and inefficient fire extinguishing equipment. Earlier in June, the department called on local technology firms to devise smart solutions and products to help upgrade its rescue services and tools.
"By applying smart solutions and using technological tools, the fire department can tackle the shortcomings and offer more efficient services to the public," he said.
Davari named heat-resistant clothes, helmets, gloves, stairwells, water pumps, fire-extinguishing chemicals and hoses as the tools commonly used by firemen, which need to be upgraded.
