    Road Death Toll Declines Nationwide

Data released by the Iranian Legal Medicine Organization reveal close to 2,600 people lost their lives in road mishaps in two months ending May 21.

The death rate is 5.7% lower, compared with the corresponding period of last year.

A comparative look at LMO chart shows that during the period, 2,578 people lost their lives in road accidents across the country. The number was 2,735 in the same period of last year.

Notorious for the high road death rate, Fars tops the provinces with 216 deaths, followed by Tehran at 191 and Sistan-Baluchestan with 184 deaths.

A closer look at the numbers shows road fatality rate in Fars Province was down 13.3% compared with the period of last year. The number dropped from 249 to 216.

Figures in Tehran also show a 3% fall, from 197 road deaths reported last year to 191 this year.

Unfortunately, the death rate in Sistan-Baluchestan shows a noticeable 13.6% rise, from 162 a year ago to 184.

Ilam, Ardabil and Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari provinces had the lowest fatality rates respectively with 14, 29 and 33 recorded deaths in the two-month period.

Among the three, the death rate in Ardabil shows a 7.42% increase. During the same period of last year, 27 road deaths were reported in the northwestern province.

Ilam and Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari reported a decrease—respectively 44% and 10.8%—in the number of recorded road fatalities.

In the year before, 25 and 37 people lost their lives in road accidents in Ilam and Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari provinces respectively.

Traffic Police have announced that sleep deprivation, fatigue, speeding, overtaking from the wrong side, running a red light, talking on the cellphone, text messaging and munching behind the wheel, as well as low-quality vehicles and roads, are the main killers on the roads.

Needless to say, motorcyclists and their dangerous driving habits also contribute to the high number of road victims.
