Taxi fares will increase in the capital after the Tehran City Council approves the new rates, head of Iran Taxi Union Morteza Zameni said.
As is the norm, Tehran Municipality every year sends a  proposal for higher public transportation rates based on the inflation rate announced by the Central Bank of Iran.
Until the new rates are approved and announced by municipal bodies, Tehran taxis are required to charge passengers the same rates as last year, Zameni told ISNA.
Taxi fares in Tehran range from 15,000 to 60,000 rials (10 to 42 cents).
After the new rates are announced, taxi drivers are obliged to place the rate stickers on their windscreen.
While urban authorities in Tehran are still debating the increase in taxi fares, fares in Karaj in the neighboring Alborz Province have risen by 30% since last week.
A Karaj Municipality official, Majid Ostad-Kazemi, said the new fares were okayed by Karaj City Council early this month.
Bus and taxi fares on average have increased by 1,500 and 3,000 rials (1 and 2 cents) in the city 40 km west of Tehran.
