The death toll as a result of heavy flooding in Iran has risen to 23, the head of Emergency Medical Service told IRIB, adding that 240 people were also injured in the past two days.

"Nineteen people lost their lives in Fars Province, others were from Kermanshah, Lorestan, Kohgiluyeh-Boyerahmad and Khouzestan provinces,” Pir Hossein Kolivand was quoted as saying.

Heavy rainfall began on Sunday, overflowing rivers, washing away bridges, inundating houses and destroying infrastructural establishments.

According to the head of the Relief and Rescue Organization of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, Morteza Salimi, 337 rescue teams has provided emergency services to more than 29,000 flood-stricken people in the past 24 hours.

Several roads have been closed due to unsafe conditions, land subsidence, and overflowing rivers.

Gorgan-Incheboroun railway is reportedly closed, after officials decided to remove four embankments to divert flood water.

Heavy rainfall also disrupted some flights at the Mashhad International Airport, but all the 54 airports across the country are operating.

Weather forecasts say the situation will persist until Friday.
