With two weeks before Norouz (Persian New Year) holidays and to help facilitate public transportation, working hours of Tehran Metro line 5 has been extended by one hour.
Line 5 connects Tehran to Karaj, capital of Alborz Province. During the annual shopping season large numbers of people from Karaj visit Tehran. Many depend on the subway for commute.
According to Mohsen Mohammadian, a deputy with Tehran Metro Company, working hours of Tehran Metro Line 5 have been extended by one hour, YJC reported.
Trains on Line 5 used to start at 5:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. with one train every 10 minutes during the rush hours and every 20 minutes during the rest of the day.
"As of today, Line 5 will provide services until 10:30 p.m.," Mohammadian said on Sunday.
The extra hour should help reduce traffic on the permanently clogged Tehran-Karaj Highway.
Tehran’s subway system comprises seven lines (line 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7) with nearly 100 stations. Line 6 and 7 are still under construction.
In addition to the subway, public transportation fleet in Tehran includes over 79,000 taxis and 6,000 buses.
Following the example of the metro company, the capital’s Bus Company said most bus lines in Tehran will offer services from 6 a.m. until 12 p.m. as of March 6.
The capital's buses work until 9:30 p.m. It merits mention that many lines normally stop operating earlier in the evening.
