Based on studies conducted, Khalslou village in Azarshahr county, East Azarbaijan Province has been identified as vulnerable to salt storms. So far from the 180,000 hectares of land around the lake 15,000 hectares have been chosen for preventive measures, said Karim Mehri, the head of the provincial agriculture jihad ministry. The operations include planting of seedlings. “We are planning to plant hardy plants which are tolerant to high salinity conditions in the region,” Mehr News Agency quoted him as saying. A thickly planted area can absorb the impact of storm surge. The vegetation can get a foothold in the dry, salty sand; the windblown salt grains get batted down to the base of the plant and the ground surface, he added.
