At the inauguration ceremony of the first Pharmaceutical Exhibition (Iran Pharma) on Monday, Rasul Dinarvand, head of Food and Drug Administration announced that “palm oil will be completely removed from dairy products.”

Although, “we constantly advise people to use low-fat milk and dairy products,” he stressed.

Adding palm oil to some products such as processed cheese which was previously permitted will be cut from October. Therefore palm vegetable oil will be completely removed from use in dairy industry.

Any diary producer violating the directive will be hauled up before the courts, he said according to Mehr news agency.

 National Debate

Earlier, after the national debate on negative effects of palm oil on health, dairy producers had been strictly warned not to use it in milk and yogurt but it was permitted in production of eight dairy products including: vegetable fat cream cheese and processed cheese, milk powder with vegetable fat, pro biotic ice cream and ice cream.

Till last year (ended March 20) the ministry of industry, mines and trade was responsible for palm oil imports. But from this Iranian year (started March 21) the Agriculture Ministry has taken responsibility, and fortunately the directive of the ministry has put a ceiling on its import to 30 percent, which means lesser palm oil imports. In addition, the ministry plans to further reduce palm oil imports to 15% next year.

Research indicates that palm oil, which is high saturated fat and low in polyunsaturated fat, promotes heart disease. In addition to negative effects on cardiovascular system, it is also carcinogenic.

Globally, use of palm oil in food products is prohibited. Manufacturers who use this oil in their products are required to advertise its use with bold headlines and letters on the product’s label.
