After forty years of liquid waste pile up in Shirabeh Lake in Kahrizak, its purification is being launched through a joint initiative by the Tehran Municipality and the University of Tehran. The water treatment plant being constructed near the lake covers three hectares and comprises 20 liquid waste removal facilities as well as three control rooms. According to ISNA, the 12,000 hectare lake contains 250 million cubic meters of methane and has caused several environmental problems in the area.
