Tehran Mayor Mohammad Ali Najafi said Friday that Tehran’s subway will soon get 1,000 new rail cars, but did not say when.
He made the remark while riding on the metro on the occasion of World Car Free Day on September 22, during which he interacted with the commuters and listened to their complaints and suggestions.
“Currently, the time interval between trains in Tehran’s subway is around five minutes for most routes. This gap should be reduced to 3.5 minutes by adding new trains to meet the growing demand,” ISNA quoted him as saying.
Tehran’s subway system, with seven operational metro lines, carries more than three million passengers a day. As of 2015, the tube was 221 kilometers long, but is planned to cover 430 kilometers with nine lines by 2020.
