An earthquake measuring 5.0 degrees on the Richter scale jolted Hojdak city in Ravar County of the southeastern Kerman Province early Wednesday at 4:38 am. No casualties were reported until print time. According to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor was registered at a depth of 10 kilometers, Iranian Seismological Center’s website reported. Iranian Red Crescent Society sent two rescue and relief teams to the region. Iran sits astride several major seismic faults, and is prone to frequent earthquakes. A devastating earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck Bam County in Kerman Province in December 2003. The deadly tremor killed at least 26,270 people and injured 30,000.
