An estimated 70,000 inmates received vocational training and 21,000 were employed inside prisons during the last calendar year that ended in March, according to the general director of the Prisons’ Employment and Training Planning Office, Seyyed Abdollah Mortazavi.
Every year, close to 600,000 people enter the country’s prisons, about 50% of whom are released within a month, the official said, adding that overall around 220,000 inmates are serving long-term sentences, IRNA reported.
According to Mortazavi, inmates who serve long terms behind bars can join the vocational programs to help them find work after release.
The vocational training prisoners get based on their personal interest are part of a larger program that follows and supervises the rehabilitation of inmates in and outside prison to help them reintegrate into society and reduce the possibility of recidivism.
