The Interior Ministry’s office for social affairs has launched a national database for panhandlers to help authorities in their plans to address the unacceptable phenomenon, the ministry’s website reported.
The “growing number of beggars, particularly in the metropolises, leads to social harm and threatens the society at large,” an Interior Ministry official, Reza Mahbubi, said.
Elaborating on the database, he said “It is the first step towards gaining a better understanding of the current state of panhandlers and their numbers,” he added.
According to head of the e-government development center at the Interior Ministry, Amir Shoja’an, the database will include detailed information on panhandlers, including their names, gender, age, and educational background, among others.
