More than 3,000 homeless addicts were picked up and sent to rehab centers across Tehran Province as part of the latest police operation which ran from July 20 to August 6, director general of the provincial office of State Welfare Organization, Asghar Baqeri, said. “Our studies suggest that the interval between the first drug use and becoming a homeless was between one to five years for almost half of the addicts (1,526),” he said, IRNA reported. “The time gap is an indicator of addiction severity.” Staff at the rehab centers affiliated to SWO screen the addicts and those with viral diseases receive necessary medical treatment.
