Almost 1,350 families in Tehran are waiting to adopt a child, head of Tehran’s State Welfare Organization, Asghar Baqeri said.
“Over the past year (ended March 20) 551 children were adopted in Tehran. Also, preparations were made in the past six months for adopting another 220 children,” he was quoted by ISNA as saying.
Waiting time for adopting a child has been reduced in recent years. “While previously it took families more than a year to adopt a child, the process now takes a few months,” he said.
Currently, 4,021 children are living in foster families in Tehran. From among families that have made requests for adoption, around 90% want a girl child, making it difficult for the organization to find families that will take boys, he was quoted as saying.
