Japanese and Iranian officials attended a joint committee set up for promoting a ‘Strategic Dialogue on the Empowerment of Women,” in Tehran on Monday. The two sides seek to expand collaboration on issues related to women’s entrepreneurship.

Vice president for women and family affairs, Massoumeh Ebtekar, deputy foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, chairman of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Nobuo Tanaka, and a group of experts on women’s affairs attended the meeting.

Participants spoke about and exchanged views on issues such as green (sustainable) entrepreneurship opportunities for women, women’s role in climate change and role of non-governmental organizations.

They identified areas for further collaboration and planned practical ways, including workshops, joint research projects and seminars to underpin the role of women, the website of the Vice Presidency for Women and Family Affairs reported.

Special advisor to the president for citizenship rights, Shahindokht Molaverdi met with Tanaka on Monday and expressed hope for continuing the joint meetings on women empowerment.

In February Molaverdi, then a vice president, visited Tokyo to attend the Iran-Japan symposium under the theme of ‘Women, Education, and Economic Empowerment’. The event discussed ways to promote and sustain women’s role in today’s world.

The Japan-Iran Conference has been held almost every year since 2010, alternating between Tokyo and Tehran. It is a venue for government officials, researchers and academia to discuss issues of international importance.

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, an affiliate of Nippon Foundation, is a public foundation corporation that conducts research activities, policy recommendations, and international collaboration aimed at the formation of a new governance system of human society that is more sustainable for environment, oceans, and human welfare.

The foundation has been involved in several projects to promote mutual trust and understanding between Iran and Japan.
