Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on Sept. 10 every year. The day is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention, in sponsorship with World Health Organization, to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides.

According to official figures released by Iran’s Legal Medicine Organization, some 5,000 Iranians lose their lives each year due to suicide, said Hassan Mousavi Chalek, head of the Iranian Social Workers Association, ISNA reported.  During the past decade the suicide rate in the country was around 5-5.2 per 100,000 people, which is much lower than the global average of 11-12 per 100,000.  Last year (ended in March) Social Emergency Centers across the country provided free counseling to 4,200 people with suicidal tendencies, of whom 2,800 were women and 1,400 men.
