Smart national ID cards were issued for 26 million Iranians in the past two years, head of the National Organization for Civil Registration, Hamid Derakhshan-Nia said. “Birth certificates (shenasnameh) will be eliminated and replaced by the new ID cards once the entire population receives the smart cards,” he was quoted by ISNA as saying. All Iranian citizens above the age of 15 are issued an ID card featuring their unique identification number and personal data. Since 2015, the NOCR started issuing smart national ID cards, featuring the individuals’ bio-metric data, a smart chip and a laser hologram.
