A bus carrying 45 passengers, mostly school students, overturned in Darab County in Fars Province in the early hours of Friday. Ten people were killed and 35 were injured with the possibility of more fatalities.
The passengers, girl students from Roudan and Minab counties in Hormozgan Province and their teachers, were travelling from Bandar Abbas to Shiraz on a school trip, Mehr News Agency reported.
Those with major injuries were transferred to Shiraz hospitals. Three victims were reported to be in critical conditions.
The tragic accident occurred at 4:26 am as the Volvo bus carrying the students hit a bridge and overturned. Early reports by Darab County traffic police cited driver fatigue and drowsiness as the cause of the fatal accident.
School trips are organized by the Education Ministry’s student’s organization each year, as part of the ministry’s education and recreational programs for students. According to the deputy head of the organization, Mahmoud Aligoo, as many as 14,000 students have taken part in school trips this year.
