International Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Day will be commemorated on September 9 at Tehran’s Shahid Rajaee Heart Hospital, located at the junction of Vali-Asr Street and Nyayesh highway.
Amir-Farjam Fazelifar, a heart electrophysiology specialist at the hospital says nearly 8-10% of people over the age of 65 suffer from Atrial Fibrillation or other fatal heart diseases across the world, ISNA reported. AF is an irregular and often rapid heart rate that can increase risk of stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. The symptoms of the disease often include heart palpitations, shortness of breath and weakness.
“While the disease is most prevalent among people aged 65 and above, some medications such as corticosteroids, steroid hormones and sexual performance medications can increase blood pressure in young people and put them at the risk of developing the health problem,” said the doctor.
September is Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month. World AF Awareness Day is held on the second Saturday of September every year.
