The literacy rate in Iran has grown 2.8% in the five-year period between 2012 to 2016, ISNA reported the head of Literacy Movement Organization, Ali Bagherzadeh as saying.
“The number of illiterate people reduced by 1.5 million during the period, which is unprecedented in the past,” said Bagherzadeh.
Sistan-Baluchestan Province has had the highest literacy growth, followed by Kurdestan Province.
Based on results of the 2016 Population and Housing Census, the average literacy rate is 87.6% for all Iranians above the age of six. A report published by UNESCO in 2015 put the global literacy rate at 86.3%.
