The 18th International Congress of Microbiology will be hold at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Science on Aug.29-31, Mehr News Agency Reported. It will host eight delegates from Italy, England, France, South Africa, and Spain, as well as some distinguished Iranian professors of microbiology and infectious diseases. The congress is to discuss ways and strategies to cope with microbial resistance, said Dr. Davoud Darban, head of the congress. Growing number of patients afflicted with infectious diseases and reported cases of failure to respond to standard treatments, including antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines – also known as drug resistance – has given rise to great concern in recent years. The matter became so critical that in 2011 the theme of World Health, marked on April 7, was “antimicrobial resistance and its global spread” and focused on the need for governments and stakeholders to implement policies and practices needed to prevent emergence of highly resistant microorganisms.
