Tehran’s new mayor has promised to provide modern equipment for fire stations in south Tehran.  During a visit to warehouses in Fadayan-e Eslam Street, which were hit by blaze on Saturday morning, Mohammad Ali Najafi acknowledged the poor state of firefighting equipment in the capital.

“A comprehensive plan to improve the safety systems is under review.” The warehouses in downtown Tehran caught fire due to inappropriate and substandard storage of goods, ISNA reported. No casualties were reported.

Najafi will be officially introduced as Tehran mayor on Wednesday 1 when Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf’s 12-year tenure comes to an end. Tehran City Council last week voted for Najafi to serve as the mayor of the metropolis that is grappling with monumental problems including toxic air pollution and the battle for decent and affordable housing.
