Proposal to Create Teachers’ GuildProposal to Create Teachers’ Guild

A bill to establish a guild for teachers has been sent to the government for approval.

The guild is meant to augment teachers’ involvement in decision making about all things educational, Mehr News Agency reported.

According to Ahmad Abedini, deputy secretary-general of the High Council for Education, the guild will function as a democratic body that will allow teachers to play a meaningful role in drawing up educational policies.

“Qualified teachers from across the country will be involved in assessment tests and teacher training programs,” he said, without elaborating on what would qualify a teacher to become a member.

Once approved by the Cabinet, the bill will be submitted to parliament to become law. Abedini expressed hope that the bill would be approved as many lawmakers support the development of guilds.
