Tehran Mayor Moahmmad Baqer Qalibaf will leave the municipality on Sept. 1, according to a member of the Tehran City Council.
Speaking to Mehr News Agency, Mohammad Alikhani said Qalibaf’s 12-year tenure as mayor will come to an end later this week, on the same day the new city council will hold its first session. The council voted last week to elect Mohammad Ali Najafi as the mayor of the metropolis that is grappling with monumental problems including toxic air pollution and the battle for decent and affordable housing.
Najafi will be officially introduced as the council’s choice for the high-profile position on Wednesday.
“Najafi has to be vetted by the Interior Ministry and his election must be approved by the minister Until then, we’ll choose a caretaker for the mayoral position,” Alikhani said.
