A water official in the southern Hormozgan Province has derided illegal water use in the coastal province, saying that there are around 1,400 unauthorized connections to urban water networks.

Speaking to the Persian-language daily Ettela’at, Ali Rezaei Sardarreh said the vast majority of illegal water users live on the fringes of cities. “The connections are not made professionally and can pollute the water network, not to mention the fact that they exacerbate water loss,” he said. Unauthorized use of utilities is a violation of law and those found in breach of regulations are subject to hefty fines. “Those found culpable have until the end of (the Persian month of) Shahrivar (Sept. 22) to settle their debts,” Sardarreh said, adding that failure to do so will result in the shutting off of the utility until all charges, including penalties, have been paid.
