About 993 hazardous areas in the Tehran Grand Bazaar have been identified, according to the mayor of District 12.

The zones suffer from a variety of structural and developmental problems stemming from unabated expansion of the marketplace as well as aging infrastructure.

“A committee has been formed to investigate and address the problems,” Abed Maleki told ISNA.

The committee is comprised of firefighting chiefs, cultural heritage officials, head of the Tehran Chamber of Guilds and Maleki.

The most important risk factors for the traditional bazaar include worn-out electric power systems, which are responsible for many fire incidents, run-down structures nearing collapse and poor warehousing, for example storing flammable material close to heaters or leaving them exposed to the sun.
