The rate of drowning in Mazandaran Province has seen a 34% decline since the beginning of the current fiscal year in March compared to the same period last year.  According to Isa Tousi, director of social and cultural affairs at Mazandaran’s governorate, 33 swimmers lost their lives in the provincial coasts of the Caspian Sea during that period, down from 49 last year.  “Plans to raise awareness, appointing more lifeguards and providing better equipment are among the main reasons for the decline in the number of people drowning,” he told Mana News Agency.  There are 371 high-risk spots in Mazandaran’s coastal strip that have been designated as no-swimming zones. The majority of drowning incidents occurred in those areas. “Those who drowned in guarded areas were swimming in the night and in the absence of lifeguards,” said the official.
